Course Description

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for persons who have to ensure that workers, the public and all relevant people are safe, when work has to be done on or next to a road in and urban area.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
Select and set up temporary road signs and barriers at road works to ensure the safety of pedestrians, motorists and workers, when any work has to be done in a road or next to a road on the pavement.

This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
ABET 4 or equivalent.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Equipment includes but is not limited to temporary road signs, cones, sign stands, lamp stands, barricades, personal safety equipment and equipment to do the work.
Type of road works include but is not limited to excavations, repairing of water pipes, working on electrical cables, repairing of roads, cutting of trees and repairing street lights.
Setting out procedures includes but is not limited to two-way roads, on sidewalks, closing of one lane near an intersection, closing of a road, one-way street, intersections, dual roads and the closing of one lane in the middle of a block.
Time of roadwork safety includes day and night.
